ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY CITY SELECTION COMMITTEE

Members of the LA County City Selection Committee includes the Mayor of each city within Los Angeles County. Each city appoints an elected official as a delegate to the City Selection Committee; it usually is the Mayor. The term of office for each Member of the LA County City Selection Committee coincides with City Mayor terms, and the Committee meets three or four times a year, at the call of the Chairman. Their duties are to appoint City representatives to such Boards, Commissions and Agencies as may be required by law, i.e., LAFCO, South Coast Air Quality Management District, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Los Angeles County Hazardous Waste Management Advisory Committee; and to nominate for appointment Members to the California Coastal Commission.

Nominations for the City Selection Committee appointees to the MTA are made by the Sector Subcommittees for the Sectors whose representatives’ terms are expiring. The cities assigned to one of the four regions in Los Angeles County (North County/San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Southeast Long Beach and Southwest Corridor) shall meet as a Sector Subcommittee. Each candidate with a majority weighted vote will then be nominated from that Sector for consideration for appointment to the MTA.

Dennis Washburn is a community builder, communicator and mediator, professionally and in spirit. A third generation Californian educated in Alhambra, at UC Berkeley (BA) and San Diego State University (MBA), his first career in advertising and marketing drew him to build his home, family and devotion to a sense of place, in the Santa Monica Mountains over the past 26 years.

He is a founder, first Mayor and Council member of LA County's 88th and still newest city of Calabasas. His passion for the conservation of natural resources finds expression through 10 years of service as an elected Director and board President of the Resource Conservation District of Santa Monica Mountains, membership on the State Association's Water Quality Task Force and appointment to the National Association of Conservation Districts' Urban, Coastal and Community Resources Committee.

He facilitated development of, and now chairs the Malibu Creek Watershed Council, and The Santa Monica Mountains Fund; is a Trustee of the Conejo-Las Virgenes Future Foundation Board, and is the Northwestern LA Cities' Representative on the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Project Steering Committee.

Louie A. Lujan

Louie Alex Lujan was born in 1976 in Montebello, CA. His parents, Alex and Rachel, eventually moved to West Covina, CA where they continued to raise him and his two younger siblings. Louie, the eldest of the three siblings, remained very active in little league baseball and volunteered for many civic related activities.  As they raised him, his parents continued to teach him the value of an education and encouraged him to attend college.

Upon graduation with high honors from West Covina High School in 1994, Lujan was accepted to attend the University of Southern California (USC) where he earned his B.A. in Political Science in 1998. Lujan was then offered a full scholarship to complete his graduate studies at Loyola Marymount University (LMU).  While at LMU, his interest in education led him to obtain his Masters Degree in Secondary Education (M.Ed.) and his teaching credential in 2000. Lujan then became a teacher of Government and Economics; his increased involvement as an educator led him to become an advocate for educational reform on the state and local level.  In 2001, Lujan returned to the USC where he earned his second Masters Degree in Public Administration (M.P.A).  In 2007, Lujan was accepted to the Claremont Graduate University (CGU) where he began work on his Ph.D. in Political Science with an emphasis in Public Policy and Higher Education.

Lujan began his political career as an undergraduate at USC where he became an Intern for Congressman Esteban Torres (Ret.). Lujan was inspired by the Congressman to further pursue his interest in politics and education.  His experiences with the Congressman and his advocacy for educational reform set the stage for his decision to run for public office. At the age of 23, he was the top vote getter among three candidates vying for two positions on the La Puente Valley County Water District in November of 1999. With the public supporting him, Mr. Lujan then set his sights on running for the La Puente City Council where, again, he was the top vote getter among six candidates vying for two seats in March 2001.  As Mayor in 2005, he was re-elected once again as the top vote getter and in 2007 he was selected by his colleagues to serve as Mayor for a second time.  His long-standing involvement in the community and quick rise in politics has given him the reputation of being one of the San Gabriel Valley's rising stars.

As an elected official, Lujan is passionate about issues such as the environment, educational reform, affordable housing, health care, ground water contamination and the utilization of technology to improve government. Currently, Lujan serves as a Committee Member for the National League of Cities Technology Council, a Delegate for the California League of Cities, the Foothill Transit Zone, the L.A. County Sanitation District, and the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments. His many community affiliations include the La Puente Youth Coalition, La Puente Redevelopment Board, Bassett Educational Advisory Committee, and the California Z Fellow Technology Advisory Committee.

In June of 2002, Lujan married his Fiancé, Christina. Their wedding was a community event held at St. Louis of France Church in La Puente, CA. Today, Louie and Christina Lujan remain active in La Puente and take great pride in serving the community.
